Support for Netgear Extender

Netgear Systems is a national corporation specialized in designing, manufacturing, and selling networking equipment and software. A wireless range extender is a device that allows you to increase the capacity, and range, of your Wi-Fi network. Netgear has developed a product, known as The Netgear Range Extender that does exactly that.

Part 1 of 3: Prepping Your Equipment

Open the RE1000 range extender box. The unit should come with a LAN cable, a setup CD, and some manuals.

Settle down near the home router. It’s helpful to be near the main router to ensure consistent and strong connectivity during the whole setup process.

Part 2 of 3: Setting Up the Extender With the Setup CD

Insert the Setup CD into your PC’s CD drive. Run the Setup CD in your computer.

Plug the Wi-Fi extender: Connect the extender to a power source during the setup process. Turn it on; it will automatically start searching for available networks.

Select your home network: From the list of available networks, choose the one that the extender will link to and use.

Input your network password:Once you’ve inputted your password, click Next.

Your extender is now set up.

Relocate the extender:Proper placement of the extender will ensure your home’s dead zones are minimized. Be sure that it’s still within range of the main router with good enough signal strength.

Run a test:Before completing the setup, it will run a test to see if the wireless connection of your relocated extender is good enough.

You may need to relocate again if the test fails.

Part 3 of 3: Manually Setting Up the Extender

Reset the range expander to factory settings:Press and hold the reset button for 10 seconds – it is located to the right of the auto configuration button.

Connect to your wireless network of your expander: You’ll be able to find the expander’s SSID and password within the manuals/paperwork it came with.

Set up a static IP address on your computer’s wireless adapter:This will allow you to use the same IP address every time you connect your device.

Open a browser of your choice:Double click on the browser to launch. Enter the range expander’s IP address – default is 192.168.1.240 – in the address bar and press enter.

Fill out necessary fields: A window will pop up asking for a username and password. Leave the username blank and enter “admin" in the password. Click “OK."

Provide your WPA pre-shared key or WEP key: Click on “Edit Security Settings," then select the wireless security settings that match the router’s configuration. Enter either the WPA or WEP key then click “Save Settings."

Save your settings: Enter your router’s SSID and choose the Channel that matches its settings. Click on “Enable" next to Wireless Security, then click on “Save Settings."

Finish installation:Unplug the power cable of the router and the range expander for 30 seconds. Reconnect the power cable to the router. When the lights on the router are steady you can reconnect range expander’s power cable. As long as the LED activity lights are blue, both devices are connected.
