Setting Up FTP Server on your Netgear Nighthawk Router

24 X 7 Technical Support

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It is used to transfer files from server to computer through the internet. FTP server is a computer which hosts the files and send them through FTP.

You can do the same by setting up FTP server on your Netgear Nighthawk Router. This will let you access your network when you are not at home. As long as your router has access to the internet, you can access your network from all over the world.

This Netgear Tech Support article will guide you on how to setup FTP server on your Netgear Nighthawk Routers.

Follow steps below:

  1.      Make a Dynamic DNS account on your Netgear Nighthwak router.
  2.      Connect a USB disk drive to your router via USB port on the back of your router and setup the FTP access for this drive.
  3.      Once you are done with making Dynamic DNS account and setting up your hard disk, you can access your disk from anywhere in the world by going to URL

yourname here is the name that you will use to setup the Dynamic DNS account.

Netgear Tech Support recommends you to use this feature only if you really need this feature. Do not set it up if you don’t need this as attackers may be able to access your disk over the internet.

Also note that your router must have a direct access to the Internet for FTP server to work.

This will not work with different router giving internet access to the router with which the hard-disk is connected.
