Prevent WannaCry from infecting your computer system

WannaCry, also known as Ransomware is a Trojan horse virus that has caused world-wide panic by infecting almost 200,000 computers in more than 150 countries. A British hacker had slowed the pace with which it was spreading by locating what is called as the kill switch. However, the kill switch was removed making it almost unstoppable and Ransomware continues to wreak havoc on computer systems worldwide.

Hackers responsible for creating WannaCry usually demand a pay of $300 to $600. If there is failure in timely payment then the hacked files are deleted permanently. This has caused widespread panic among businesses and individuals as well.

However, apart from patch and information from the IT guys in every country; there are some basic steps that can be undertaken to keep your system safe from Ransomware attacks.

1) Do not run unknown files

A majority of Trojan horse viruses like WannaCry can spread when a user downloads a file from an unknown vendor. Usually, files sent as e-mail attachments from obscure URL’s are in fact malware and virus programs. It is highly advised that you not open any mail or file received from an unknown source. However, some Windows OS’s including Vista have a feature named User Account Control that can help prevent Ransomware from having full access to the system.

2) Data Back-up

Despite regular back-up and updates, there is a chance that your system might be compromised. If your system has some sensitive data especially if you own a business; you should always have a back-up of the entire data. This data back-up can be taken on either an external hard drive or online cloud service.

3) Automatic updates

One of the effective methods to keep your system safeguarded against Ransomware attacks is keep regular window updates on. In this particular scenario, WannaCry was not able to impact users with system updates done as on May 2017. Here is how you can keep windows update option on;
A) Windows 7

  1. Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update.
  2. On the left-hand side, choose Change settings.
  3. Under Important updates, make sure it says Install updates automatically (recommended).
  4. Check all the other boxes on the page, and then click OK.

B) Windows 8.1

  1. Hit Win key + X, and click Control Panel.
  2. Head to System and Security > Windows Update.
  3. On the left-hand side, choose Change settings.
  4. Under Important updates, make sure it says Install updates automatically (recommended).
  5. Check all the other boxes on the page, and then click OK.

  1. Hit Start key, and click on the Settings gear icon.
  2. Head to Update & security, and then click Windows Update on the left.
  3. On the right, choose Advanced options.
  4. Under Choose when updates are installed, make sure it says Current Branch, and that both the values for feature and quality update are set to 0.
  5. Check the first two boxes, and close the window.

4) 3rd Party fire-wall and anti-virus

Hackers usually design a virus program that can pass untraced through Windows Firewall and Windows Defender program, although these are capable but not the best. If you looking forward to save your system from virus and malware programs; consider getting an effective anti-virus or firewall program.

There are tons of Firewall programs online that include Kaspersky, Avast, Comodo and ZoneAlarm. A number of anti-virus programs also offer additional benefits such as online protection, network scan, password manager, VPN solution and many customized protection plans.
